    John Charles

John Charles was born on May 21, 1960, in the pre-Roe days when such a culmination to pregnancy was considerably more common. Blessed with a family that moved frequently, he was raised in Washington, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and a few other spots as well. He graduated from Marion Center High School in Pennsylvania in 1978 and immediately entered Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he majored in beer and liberal hedonism for one year before exploring other career paths at the university's request. After a few years of lowly jobs followed by a hitch in the Air Force in which Ronald Reagan deployed him to test the patience of the American officer class at RAF Upper Heyford (UK), he enrolled at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and in 1987 graduated cum laude "with interdisciplinary honors" with one BA in English and Latin and another BA in history. He spent one year as a doctoral candidate in English at the State University of New York at Buffalo, but left when it was revealed that he was neither a Marxist nor a lesbian. (This scandal would have precluded a meaningful academic career.) In 1997 he received his law degree from Vanderbilt University and now practices law in Alabama, his adopted home of almost 20 years.

His professional life has included stints as a salesman, lifeguard, construction worker, factory worker, telephone repairman, computer operator, waiter, gas station manager, technical writer, project manager, computer systems analyst, computer systems engineer, roadie, furniture refinisher, lawyer and stock boy -- not necessarily in that order.

He has one daughter, Kallista, who was born in 1992 and shows promise of leading a much more well-adjusted life than her father.
